Altus Servers from Penguin Computing Now Certified on CDH4 (Cloudera’s Distribution Including Apache Hadoop Version 4)
Penguin Computing, experts in high performance computing today announced that its Altus 1850i and Altus 2850GTi servers are now certified on CDH4 (Cloudera’s Distribution Including Apache Hadoop Version 4).
Penguin’s Altus servers are based on AMD's latest line of Opteron 6200 processors that offer high levels of compute density. The Altus 1850i is a versatile, power efficient two way system and can accommodate up to 32 cores, 512GB of memory and four 3.5’’ drives in a 1U form factor for an overall storage capacity of 16TB. The Altus 2850GTi is based on the same motherboard as the 1850i and hosts eight 3.5’’ drives for an aggregate capacity of 32TB. With its high core counts and large memory configurations these systems are well suited server platforms for running Hadoop. The certification of these systems is a first step towards certifying other Penguin systems that will provide higher drive densities.
“Having pioneered the concept of Linux based clusters, Penguin has deep and long standing expertise in the field of distributed computing on x86 based systems. We have been shipping complete systems for Hadoop and map-reduce workloads since these technologies started evolving,” said Charles Wuischpard, CEO of Penguin Computing. “With an increasing number of customers asking for a fully supported end-to-end Big Data solution it was a logical step for us to formally certify our systems on CDH4, which we regard as the leading commercially supported Hadoop distribution.”
CDH is the world’s most widely deployed distribution of Apache Hadoop in commercial and non-commercial environments. Today, more than half of the Fortune 50 run open source Apache Hadoop based on Cloudera. With tens of thousands of nodes in production, Cloudera has established itself as the category leader that is setting the standard for Apache Hadoop in the enterprise. CDH4 is a 100-percent open source distribution that combines Apache Hadoop with other open source applications within the Hadoop stack to deliver advanced, enterprise-grade features.
The Cloudera Certified Technology program, which Penguin Computing has joined, makes it simpler for
Apache Hadoop technology buyers to purchase the right cluster components and software applications to extract the most value from their data. Clusters that leverage CDH4 alongside Cloudera Certified Technologies such as Penguin’s Altus servers, operate with reduced risk and lower total cost of ownership. Cloudera Certified Technologies have been tested and validated to use supported APIs and to comply with Cloudera development guidelines for integration with Apache Hadoop.
“Building a cluster from the ground up to run an Apache Hadoop cluster can be challenging. There are numerous choices to be made at all levels of the stack, and making those choices can be very complicated. The Cloudera Certified Technology program is designed to make those choices easy and reliable,” said Tim Stevens, Vice President of Corporate and Business Development, Cloudera. “We’re committed to helping enterprises achieve the most from their Big Data initiatives, and we’re pleased that Penguin Computing has completed the certification of its Altus servers on CDH4.”
