VoLTE & Vo5G

Efficient next generation voice services using AMR, EVRC, EVS and other voice codecs

  • Deploy voice transcoding quickly and cost-effectively using power-efficient DSPs
  • PCI Express add-in acceleration cards simplify integration, upgrades and scalability

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over 5G (Vo5G) services rely on voice transcoding using codecs such as FR/EFR, AMR, EVRC and EVS. Often deployed on media resource function (MRF) or similar platforms, voice transcoding can be implemented as virtual, NFV cloud or hybrid appliance options.

Any of these platforms can benefit by using PCI Express (PCIe) add-in acceleration cards to offload the voice processing from the host processor. Using add-in cards enables the main processors to focus on other tasks, such as orchestration, management and billing functions.

By employing highly efficient digital signal processors (DSP) to provide direct offload of the host CPU, PCIe acceleration engines can take the place of additional servers when deploying high-density voice processing. Network equipment providers can either add or substantially increase the voice channel processing density within existing systems, so reducing overall power and space demands for their equipment as it scales to higher throughput.

EVS Codec

VoLTE and Vo5G services are increasingly using the Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) codec. This is a super-wideband speech audio codec developed by 3GPP. It offers music-quality HD voice while using less bandwidth and capacity, effectively extending radio network coverage, and improving network resilience. The robustness of the EVS codec over previous generation codecs can help lower the cost of radio access network (RAN) infrastructure.
